Why choose a boarding kennel?
Boarding kennels give your dog their own secure space, usually an individual kennel with a sleeping area and a run. There are staff on site, set feeding times, and exercise in paddocks or on walks. Good kennels are calm, clean and well organised, and they’re used to dogs of every size and temperament.
Kennels can suit dogs that are easier to manage in their own space, owners booking longer stays or busy dates, and families who need to board several dogs together or a dog and a cat. Many of Wigan’s kennels are family-run and have been going for decades.
How kennels are licensed
Boarding kennels are licensed by the local council under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018. Wigan Council inspects kennel size and construction, heating and ventilation, exercise areas, cleaning, record-keeping and how staff care for the dogs. Each licence comes with a star rating from one to five and lasts between one and three years.
Questions to ask before you book
- Can I look round before booking?
- What’s your licence star rating?
- How often are dogs exercised, and is it individually or in groups?
- Are the kennels heated in winter and kept cool in summer?
- Can dogs from the same family share a kennel?
- Which vet do you use, and what happens if my dog becomes unwell?
- Do you also take cats?
Frequently asked questions
Do boarding kennels in Wigan need a licence?
Yes. All boarding kennels and catteries in England must be licensed by their local council. Kennels in Wigan are inspected by Wigan Council and given a star rating from one to five.
Do any Wigan kennels take cats as well?
Several boarding kennels in the borough also run a cattery, so you can board a dog and a cat in the same place. Check each listing's website or ask directly.
What vaccinations does my dog need for kennels?
Kennels will ask to see an up-to-date vaccination record, and most also require the kennel cough vaccine. Some vaccines need to be given a couple of weeks before your dog's stay, so check early.
How far in advance should I book?
Kennels get busy over school holidays, bank holidays and Christmas. For those dates, booking several months ahead is sensible.
Can I take my own dog food and bedding?
Most kennels will happily feed your dog's usual food, and many let you bring a blanket or toy that smells of home. Ask what they provide and what you should bring.
